Carson Kuhn
Alta High School, 103 lbs.

School Classification: 5A

Carson Kuhn

Carson Kuhn is one of the slickest young wrestlers I have ever seen.  He is smart, level-headed, a fine technician, and never seems to lose his cool.  And it's paid off for him, where he has been racking up credentials on the state, regional and national level for years.  As a freshman, giving up a TON of weight, he still won the championship for Region II and was the Outstanding Wrestler for the lower weights.  The only thing that held him back as a freshman was his size.  His sophomore year did not have that problem, as his undefeated 49-0 record attests and pinning his way through the state tournaments.  He racked up more USA Wrestling All-American finishes this summer, taking 3rd in Greco-Roman and 5th in freestyle in Fargo.  The previous year, he won that tournament in freestyle, after finishing second in Greco-Roman.  At the USA Wrestling Junior Western Regional Championships in Las Vegas, he won titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.  In 2007, he took second at the FILA Cadet Nationals last year in Greco-Roman and represented the United States in China, going 2-2.  He was also the Intermountain Champion for the Cadet division last year.  He was the UtahWrestling.org Youth Wrestler of the Year in 2004.

2008 State Champion as a freshman (103 lbs.).  2007–2008 Record: 49-0.  2006–2007 Record: 34-13.  Career Interscholastic Record: 83-13.

Following is a summary of Carson's wrestling career so far:

Raider Lofthouse
Mountain Crest High School, 112 lbs.

School Classification: 4A

Raider destroys opponents — he beats them down and reduces them to nothing.  His brother (and uncle) are just monsters, but Raider is meaner.  I have a nephew who had to wrestle Raider and Ethen both, and Ethen was satisfied with dominating his opponent — Raider wanted to dominate, but make sure you left the mat limping, to boot.  He took state as a freshman and a sophomore.  He pinned his way through the tournament as a freshman, but had a major brawl in the finals his sophomore year against his long-time nemesis Tucker Ray of Roy.  The state finals came down to an 11-9 decision in overtime.  Raider also hits the toughest tournaments in the country and comes back a winner almost as often as Ethen.  In Fargo last summer, at the USA Wrestling Cadet National Championships, he finished third in freestyle and eighth in Greco-Roman, after finishing fourth in folkstyle at USA Wrestling Western Regionals and fifth in freestyle in Pocatello.  He's a four-time state champion in Greco-Roman and a three-time state champ in freestyle. He won a national title at the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Denver, and finished sixth at the NHSCA Freshman Nationals in Virginia Beach.  This kid's got the stuff.

2008 State Champion (112 lbs.).  2007 State Champion as a freshman (103 lbs.).  2007–2008 Record: 41-7.  2006–2007 Record: 34-3. Career Interscholastic Record: 75-10.

Following is a summary of Raider's wrestling career so far:

  • Two-Time High School State Champion (as a freshman)

  • Three-Time State Champion, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Freestyle (2004–2006, 2007)

  • Four-Time State Champion, USA Wrestling-Utah State Championships, Greco-Roman (2004–2007)

Bryson Foy
Altamont High School, 130 lbs.
GPA: 3.5

School Classification: 1A (200 enrolled)

Bryson Foy

Bryson is a tough, solid wrestler who keeps coming at you, no matter what he might be hit with.  He's skilled and, at the same time, has that mental toughness that makes all the difference in the tough matches.  His sophomore year, he took state, pinning everyone except for Chase Ellet of Wayne, who he beat by major decision (10-0) in the semis, then won his championship match in less than a minute.  He then followed that with a USA Wrestling-Utah state title in folkstyle wrestling.  He took state as a freshman at 119 pounds, beating Wayne's Jeffrey Stephenson 14-11 in the finals (we all know how tough Stephenson is) but, before that, he beat a state runner-up from the previous year, Derek Hererra of Duchesne 6-2.  The state title in high school followed on two junior-high state championships, as well as being named Outstanding Wrestler at 1A/2A/3A Junior High State Championships in 2006.  In 2006, he finished third at the U.S. Folkstyle Nationals behind two talented kids, Spanish Fork's Kaleb Ashworth and Payson's Brock Brown.  He won his region in high school and will undoubtedly continue his winning ways his sophomore year.

2008 State Champion (130 lbs.).  2007 State Champion as a freshman (119 lbs.).  2007–2008 Record: 48-5.  2006–2007 Record: 48-3 with 29 pins.  Career Interscholastic Record: 96-8.

Kade Moss
Bingham High School, 130 lbs.

School Classification: 5A

Kade is a talented kid with drive that has taken him a long way in his wrestling career.  He won a second state titles as a sophomore, beating Davis' Zak Baker in the finals with a 5-1 decision.  This came after beating Fremont's Trae Bennet and Brighton's Connor Meadows, both with sound decisions.  He finished third in Greco-Roman at the FILA Cadet Nationals this past summer, as well as a sixth-place finish in Greco at the Junior Western Regionals in Las Vegas.  (He won that tournament in 2007.)  He came out on top of the 2008 Rocky Mountain Rumble, beating Wasatch's Trevor Sweat in the finals.  He won a state title as a freshman, beating Weber's Bracken Nipko in the finals, 3-2, after beating Viewmont's Mike Winger 7-2 (who was the one who put Alta's Carson Kuhn into the consolation bracket). In 2006, he was the runner-up in Greco-Roman at the USA Wrestling Cadet National Championships in Fargo.  He is rock solid and has the mileage on the mat to prove it, even including two junior-high state championships, including in 2004, where he placed ahead of names like Fremont's Matthew Finger, Box Elder's Koleton Hardy and Payson's Brock Brown.

Colton Cannon
Payson High School, 152 lbs.
GPA: 3.6

School Classification: 4A (1,100 enrolled)

Kaleb Ashworth

Colton is sharp and explosive.  He hits his moves hard, he hits them accurately, executing very sharp technique, and he is fast.  As a sophomore, he took a serious step up from his freshman year, finishing with a record of 42-9 and as a runner up at state, where the only person to beat him was Matt Brown of Cyprus.  (And we all know how tough that kid is.)  That came after a Region VII title and Outstanding Wrestler honors.  He also placed sixth at the Rocky Mountain Rumble and 4th at the Viewmont Invitational as a sophomore.  This kid has got some serious stuff.  I first took real notice of him in 2006, in the finals at 4A/5A Junior High State, where he handled Travis McRae of Bingham (who had been pinning opponents left and right to get to the finals).  I knew, then and there, that he was the real deal.  Colton is a three-time champion at the U.S. Folkstyle Nationals, and was named the Outstanding Wrestler at that tournament in 2001.  He is a three-time Junior High State Champion, and placed four times at the very tough Reno World Championships, including being one of only nine Utah wrestlers to make it to the finals in 2008.

2008 State Runner Up (135 lbs.).  2007 4th in State (135 lbs.).  Career Interscholastic Record: 20-8.  2007–2008 Record: 42-9.  2006–2007 Record: 20-8.

Following is a summary of Colton's wrestling career so far:

  • 2008 Runner Up, High School State Championships

  • 2007 4th Place, High School State Championships

  • 2008 Sophomore Wrestler of the Year, UtahWrestling.org

  • 2008 Champion, Region VII Championships
