Letters to the Editor

"Wrestling for the Home Schooled"

Mr. Kilpack,

I have a nephew in Utah, who is home schooled, and would like to wrestle independently in the 3A regionals. Would you be able to provide me any information on how he may accomplish this?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,

Raquel Sutherlin

Editor's Response

That is a good question that I have not been asked before. So I am forwarding this along to Bart Thompson with Utah High School Activities Association. He should be able to answer your question. If you would like to call them directly, then the phone number is listed on their Web site at www.uhsaa.org.

Bart, if you could CC me on the response, I would love to know the answer in case if I get the question again.

Response to Editor's Response

The rules regarding participation of home schooled students in Utah High School Activities Association sponsored activities are the same in all sports. A student must represent a member school. They may not participate as an independent. However, a provision which allows home schooled students to participate on teams of the public school within which boundary the student’s parent or legal guardian resides does exist within the UHSAA rules. Article I, Section 13 of the UHSAA By-Laws is where the rule is found. Means by which scholastic eligibility for a home schooled student is demonstrated to the school with which they participate is found in the Interpretations and Guidelines section of the UHSAA Handbook in Interpretation #5. The UHSAA By-Laws as well as Interpretations and Guidelines are found on the UHSAA Web site and are accessed from the lower part of the menu on the left side of the UHSAA Home Page. I have included direct links here:
