"Freestyle/Greco Club Startup
Info"
Bill,
My name is Ted Sierer. I am a wrestling coach at
Highland High School. I used to be the head
coach at Brighton High School. I would like to start
up a freestyle/Greco club here at Highland, but I am a
little unsure about what I need to do. While I was at
Brighton, I never had to worry about it since Jed
Jones took care of most of that.
Would you please let me know what I need to do to get
a club started here so we can begin competing this
spring.
Thanks, Ted Sierer

The club will need to be chartered with
USA Wrestling. There is a new system to do that online,
but I am unsure how (I still need to do that myself). For
that information, contact the Membership Chair, Dawn
Malan. Her e-mail address is
dmmalan@comcast.net.
In terms of scheduling, the tournament
schedule is on
UtahWrestling.org. These tournaments (unless otherwise
noted) are sanctioned through USA Wrestling, so they
require a USA Wrestling Card for the coaches and for each
wrestler. The cost this year is $35 and can also be
received online. (Click
here for
more information and
here to apply.)
At tournaments, if you help provide
referees (preferably certified) and/or pairers (again,
preferable certified), then you will be eligible to
receive rebates from the tournament in exchange for that
help. The state has scheduled three referee/pairer clinics
this year, also noted on the Freestyle/Greco-Roman
schedule.
This year, the Board voted unanimously to
open up the Greco-Roman tournaments to all ages again
(like it used to be). So I heartily encourage you to bring
your wrestlers of all ages to the Greco-Roman tournaments
on Friday nights.
Other than that, I would be happy to
answer specific questions, if you have them.

I forgot to ask you one other thing ... do you know
when/where any classes are being taught for coaches to get
their Bronze level certification?

I don't know the answer to that one, but
Brock Moore
