Utah Athletes Shine at High School State Championships

High school wrestlers converged on Utah Valley State College in Orem for the State Championships in each of their divisions, 1A through 5A.  Competition concluded with Viewmont High School winning the 5A championship, Spanish Fork High School winning 4A, Wasatch High School winning 3A, Millard High School winning 2A and Altamont High School winning the 1A title.

Twenty-one teams competed at the 5A state tournament, with Viewmont unsurprisingly winning the title after being ranked 1st by the Utah Wrestling Coaches Association all year.  They scored 239.5 team points, well over Weber High School’s 2nd-place finish with 153.5 and Brighton High School’s 140.

Viewmont had four state champions, including Shay Lawrence (130), Adam Kjar (135), Landon Essig (152) and Josh Mattert (215), winning four of their five championship matches.

Seventeen teams competed at the 2A state tournament, with Millard repeating as state champion after enjoying a no. 1 ranking by the UWCA all season.  More of a battle for the championship that the three larger divisions, Millard scored 292 team points (also outscoring its 4A and 5A counterparts) to Juab High School’s 264.5.  Third-place Richfield High School moved into 3rd with 158.

Millard had four state champions, winning four of its five championship matches.  Millard state champions included Mark Pentz (112), Maben Larsen (130), Bryan Whitaker (145) and Clint Monsen (171).

Ten teams competed at the 1A state tournament, with the only surprise finish of all the state tournaments.  Altamont, ranked 3rd all season, pulled off the upset, defeating 2nd-place Rich High School 187-181, and 3rd-place Wayne was only two points behind with 179.
