Carson Kuhn
Alta High School, 112 lbs.

School Classification: 5A

Carson Kuhn

Carson Kuhn is one of the slickest young wrestlers I have ever seen.  He is smart, level-headed, a fine technician, and never seems to lose his cool.  And it's paid off for him, where he has been racking up credentials on the state, regional and national level for years.  His junior year, he had his second undefeated season, finishing 34-0, pinning West Jordan's Jacob Falk (himself one of Utah's best) in the finals in the third round.  Last summer, he finished third in freestyle at the USA Wrestling Junior National Championships and won the title in freestyle at the USA Wrestling Junior Western Regional Championships.  But that's nothing compared to traveling to Turkey to represent the U.S. in the FILA World Championships in freestyle (he finished 20th).  His sophomore year he went 49-0, pinning his way through the state tournament.  He racked up more USA Wrestling All-American finishes that summer, taking 3rd in Greco-Roman and 5th in freestyle in Fargo.  As a freshman, giving up a ton of weight (he only weighed about 90 lbs.), he still won the championship for Region II and was the Outstanding Wrestler for the lower weights.  The only thing that held him back as a freshman was his size.  The previous year, he won that tournament in freestyle, after finishing second in Greco-Roman.  At the USA Wrestling Junior Western Regional Championships in Las Vegas, he won titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.  In 2007, he took second at the FILA Cadet Nationals last year in Greco-Roman and represented the United States in China, going 2-2.  He was also the Intermountain Champion for the Cadet division in 2007.  He was the UtahWrestling.org Youth Wrestler of the Year in 2004.

2009 State Champion as a freshman (112 lbs.).  2008 State Champion as a freshman (103 lbs.).  2008–2009 Record: 34-0.  2007–2008 Record: 49-0.  2006–2007 Record: 34-13.  Career Interscholastic Record: 117-13.

Raider Lofthouse
Mountain Crest High School, 140 lbs.

School Classification: 4A

Raider Lofthouse

Raider destroys opponents — he beats them down and reduces them to nothing.  His brother (and uncle) are just monsters, but Raider is meaner.  I have a nephew who had to wrestle Raider and Ethen both, and Ethen was satisfied with dominating his opponent — Raider wanted to dominate, but make sure you left the mat limping, to boot.  He took state as a freshman, sophomore and junior, the last outside the bottom weights.  He pinned his way through the tournament as a freshman, but had a major brawl in the finals his sophomore year against his long-time nemesis Tucker Ray of Roy.  The state finals came down to an 11-9 decision in overtime.  His junior year was just as tough, destroying very tough opponents like Payson's Jeremiah Guzman, then meeting Box Elder's Koleton Hardy (also an outstanding wrestler in Utah) in the finals for a very tough 5-3 decision for the title.  This was a revenge match, after Hardy beating him earlier in the season in overtime at the Richardson Memorial.  Raider also hits the toughest tournaments in the country and comes back a winner almost as often as Ethen.  In Fargo in 2008, at the USA Wrestling Cadet National Championships, he finished third in freestyle and eighth in Greco-Roman, after finishing fourth in folkstyle at USA Wrestling Western Regionals and fifth in freestyle in Pocatello.  He's a four-time state champion in Greco-Roman and a three-time state champ in freestyle. He won a national title at the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Denver, and finished sixth at the NHSCA Freshman Nationals in Virginia Beach.  This kid's got the stuff.

2009 State Champion (135 lbs.).  2008 State Champion (112 lbs.).  2007 State Champion as a freshman (103 lbs.).  2008–2009 Record: 45-4.  2007–2008 Record: 41-7.  2006–2007 Record: 34-3. Career Interscholastic Record: 120-14.

Bryson Foy
Altamont High School, 140 lbs.
GPA: 3.5

School Classification: 1A (200 enrolled)

Bryson Foy

Bryson is a tough, solid wrestler who keeps coming at you, no matter what he might be hit with.  He's skilled and, at the same time, has that mental toughness that makes all the difference in the tough matches.  His junior year, he took his third state title, pinning Niko Reyes of Whitehorse in 47 seconds (his longest match of the day was 49 seconds).  He followed that with a sixth-place finish at the Rocky Mountain National Championships in Denver.  In his sophomore year, he took state by pinning everyone except for Chase Ellet of Wayne, who he beat by major decision (10-0) in the semis, then won his championship match in less than a minute.  He then followed that with a USA Wrestling-Utah state title in folkstyle wrestling.  He took state as a freshman at 119 pounds, beating Wayne's Jeffrey Stephenson 14-11 in the finals (we all know how tough Stephenson is) but, before that, he beat a state runner-up from the previous year, Derek Hererra of Duchesne 6-2.  The state title in high school followed on two junior-high state championships, as well as being named Outstanding Wrestler at 1A/2A/3A Junior High State Championships in 2006.  In 2006, he finished third at the U.S. Folkstyle Nationals behind two talented kids, Spanish Fork's Kaleb Ashworth and Payson's Brock Brown.  He won his region in high school and will undoubtedly continue his winning ways his sophomore year.

2009 State Champion (140 lbs.).  2008 State Champion (130 lbs.).  2007 State Champion as a freshman (119 lbs.).  2008–2009 Record: 48-4.  2007–2008 Record: 48-5.  2006–2007 Record: 48-3 with 29 pins.  Career Interscholastic Record: 144-12.

Tyson Larsen

Tyson Larsen is an outstanding upper-weights wrestler.  As a junior, he pinned his way through the state tournament, including in his championship match against Zaq Brinkerhoff of Altamont, with a first-round fall.  He finished with a record of 38-2.  As a sophomore, he took state and was named Outstanding Wrestler, pinning his way through the tournament, until the finals, when he beat Kyle Jackson of Duschesne in a barn burner, with a score of 14-11.  For his high-school career, he has finished with an outstanding record of 110-20 with 99 pins.

Derek Peterson
Delta High School, 135 lbs.
GPA: 3.75

School Classification: 3A (450 enrolled)

Derek Peterson

Derek is slick and powerful, with solid technique and execution.  As a junior, he took state over some very tough opponents, including a 2-1 decision over freshman stud Teddy Hackford of Wasatch (who went on to finish fourth) and Uintah's sophomore star, Taylor Merkley in the finals, with a 6-1 decision.  As a sophomore, he finished second in state, behind Wasatch's Blake Mangum in a high-scoring decision, 17-11.  It's interesting to note that his patch to the finals that year included beating Merkley (then a freshman) and Cedar City's Alex Riddle.  As a freshman, his only loss at the state tournament came to Uintah's Zack Reynolds (who went on to win it).  He has won 13 championships at high-school tournaments, as well as three junior-high state titles, and a runner-up finish at the Rocky Mountain National Championships.

2009 State Champion (130 lbs.).  2008 State Runner Up (125 lbs.).  2007 3rd in State (112 lbs.).  2008–2009 Record: 48-2.  2007–2008 Record: 43-7.  2006–2007 Record: 37-10.  Career Interscholastic Record: 128-19.
