USA Wrestling Sets Membership Records in 2006-2007
USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur
wrestling in the United States, is proud to report that
the organization’s membership set records in four major
categories during the 2006-07 year.
The 2006-07 membership year, which ended on August 31,
2007, set annual records for athletes, coaches, clubs and
sanctioned events.
During the 2006-07 year, USA Wrestling registered 145,145
athlete members, topping the record of 142,399 athletes
set during the 2004-05 year.
The number of registered coaches climbed to 21,792 from
the previous record set one year ago in 2005-06 at 20,094
coach members.
USA Wrestling chartered clubs reached a new record level,
with 3,293 club programs, up from record of 3,123 clubs
set last year during the 2005-06 season.
Sanctioned events were also at a new level, with 1,762 USA
Wrestling events during the 2006-07 season, breaking the
previous record of 1,741 events from the 2004-05 season.
The membership records were possible through the efforts
of USA Wrestling’s volunteer leaders on the regional,
state and local levels, who provided the most
comprehensive program of wrestling activities in the
nation.
“Setting records in these four main membership categories
is a tribute to the USA Wrestling volunteers and state
leaders that believe in the mission and goals of USA
Wrestling. These dedicated people give so much to make
sure that wrestling continues to grow at every level
across the United States,” said Mark A. Scott, Director of
State Services.
“USA Wrestling’s membership is a great indication of how
successful the organization is with all the programs and
services it provides. With the Olympic year coming up, and
the excitement the Olympic Games generate, USA Wrestling
anticipates records may be set again in 2008 though our
tremendous corps of volunteers, coaches, officials, and
administrators,” said Scott.
For the membership year ending August 31, 2007, USA
Wrestling is proud to announce that 33 states increased
their athlete membership from the year before. Those state
organizations and their leaders should be commended for
their hard work and effort.
