Wasatch Takes Title
At Reno, Nev., Wasatch won the Brute Reno
Tournament of Champions, often called the toughest
tournament in the U.S., last weekend.
Wasatch accumulated 207.5 points, topping runner-up
Bakersfield, Calif., which scored 194. The rest of the top
five included Easton, Penn. (173.5), Ponca City, Okla.
(164) and Rio Rancho, N.M. (156). The field included 87
schools, including five of the top-15 ranked schools in
the nation.
Lehi finished 14th with 94.5 points.
Each Wasatch wrestler won at least one match and got at
least one pin. Wasatch wrestlers pinned 24 opponents in
the first day of action. It was the second time Wasatch
has won this tournament, and only one other team --
Easton, Penn. -- has ever accomplished that. The Wasps'
other win came in 1999.
Cyler Sanderson of Wasatch won the 135-pound weight
class. Teammate Colton Salazar was second in the 152-pound
class. Cody Sweat (140), Peter Rose (145) and Dallin North
(275) earned fourth-place finishes and Casey Smith was
fifth at 103. Sanderson and Salazar earned All-American
citations for their finishes.
North Sanpete's Jake Swenson was fourth at 125 and
Lehi's Tyson Thompson (145) and Mike Robbins (130) were
fifth and sixth, respectively. |
