Wolverines Top Bison In Big 12 Dual

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley wrestling defeated North Dakota State 24-14 on Friday evening inside Lockhart Arena. UVU (2-3, 1-3) got out to a quick 12-0 lead after wins by Yusief Lillie, Kase Mauger, and Haiden Drury. NDSU (3-8, 2-3) rallied and took the lead before No. 26 Jacob Armstrong and No. 17 Evan Bockman sealed the dual with victories.

"We were happy with the performance of the team tonight. It was the most solid we've wrestled in a dual through all ten weights," said UVU head coach Greg Williams.\

Williams continued, "We were happy for Yusief getting a solid win to get us started while Kase's pin was a great boost. Haiden showed he's really getting back to form, earning his second straight win over a ranked wrestler. Jacob and Evan did a great job dictating in the third period to earn a major decision and a tech fall respectively. Chase was also impressive, wrestling smart throughout his match and picking his spot to win in OT."

Lillie picked up his first win of the season to open the dual with a 5-2 decision after taking an early 3-0 lead with a first-period takedown. After Ryan Henningson cut into the lead with an escape to make it 3-1, Lillie added an escape and held on in the third period. He earned his fifth point of the match with riding time.

The fast start continued for the Wolverines as Mauger pinned NDSU's Fernando Barretto in 2:22 for his first dual win and the first bonus points victory of the evening for UVU. It was the only fall recorded during the dual.

Drury kept the momentum going at 141 with an 8-7 victory after an action-packed period. He took the early advantage with a 4-0 lead after a takedown and an escape before adding a pair of escapes to go up 6-3 at the end of the second. No. 28 Gavin Drexler tied the bout at 6-6 in the third period before the two traded points, and the match went in UVU's favor due to riding time.

The Wolverines controlled the dual at 12-0 before North Dakota State responded first with a victory by Maxwell Petersen, who came from behind, scoring a third-period takedown to steal the win from Isaiah Delgado. The Bison continued to rally with victories at 157 and 165, but No. 18 Gaven Sax (NDSU) won by tech fall to give NDSU a 14-12 lead.

Utah Valley swung the momentum again, starting with a win by No. 26 Armstrong. He took an early 3-0 lead on a takedown, but NDSU freshman Adam Cherne fought back with an escape, cutting the lead to 3-1. The lead was cut to 3-2 after a second-period escape, but Armstrong outscored his opponent 8-1 the rest of the way for an 11-3 major decision.

No. 17 Bockman secured the dual with a dominant win at 197, scoring on six takedowns en route to a 19-4 technical fall in 6:44. He ended with 6 of UVU's 14 takedowns during the dual. The Wolverines held a 14-7 advantage in takedowns in the dual.

The dual concluded at heavyweight with Chase Trussell going up 1-0 on an escape. Devon Dawson tied the dual on an escape of his own in the third period. In sudden victory, Trussell ended the match with a takedown that moved him to 6-2 overall and 2-0 In dual action.

Utah Valley returns to action tomorrow night for a dual inside Lockhart Arena with No. 11 South Dakota State. The action begins at 6:00 p.m. MT and can be seen on Youtube.com/GoUVU, with live scoring on TrackWrestling. UVU hits the road next week for duals at Air Force and Northern Colorado.
