It is not every year that Utah produces a
four-time state wrestling champion. The 2007 wrestling
season must have been extra special, because the state had
two seniors achieve the rare feat.
Weber's Shay Warren and Davis' Sean Porter
became the 15th and 16th wrestlers in state history to win
four solo titles, joining an elite list including Olympic
gold medalist Cael Sanderson.
Warren won at 125 pounds, while Porter's
fourth title came at 140. Weber also won the team title in
Class 5-A.
Mountain Crest used superior depth and
unexpectedly strong performances by its underclassmen to
win its second-straight 4-A crown.
In 3-A, Wasatch took its fifth consecutive
state title despite a coaching change. The Wasps didn't
miss a beat while winning their 17th overall state title.
Millard dominated in 2-A all season, and
capped off a fantastic year with its second straight team
title and eighth in the last 10 years.
In 1-A, Altamont entered the final day of
the tournament with a 20-point lead. Duchesne fared well
in third-place matches to close the gap, but the Long
Horns defeated the Eagles in four of six head-to-head
championship matches to get the crown.
TEAM CHAMPIONS: Weber (5-A), Mountain
Crest (4-A), Wasatch (3-A), Millard (2-A), Altamont (1-A)
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Shay Warren, Weber
LOOKING AHEAD: With Weber losing many of
its stars and Viewmont coach Bart Thompson leaving his
dynasty for a post with the UHSAA, 5-A will likely see a
dramatic changing of the guard. Class 4-A will feature the
same three powers - Mountain Crest, Box Elder and
Springville, while Wasatch won't slip much in 3-A, if at
all. Likewise, Millard and Altamont have what it takes to
repeat.
