Prep Wrestling: Best of the Best to
Meet at Invite
by Chhun Sun
The Layton Invitational Tournament starts
today, and some wrestlers might not enjoy that thought.
The two-day event will give local
wrestlers either an idea of how good they are or how much
improvement they'll need to make in the coming months.
Some of the 24 teams competing in the annual event are the
best in the state.
The list includes Wasatch, arguably the
best all-around team in Utah; Viewmont, last year's Class
5A runner-up and the state champion the previous three
years; Mountain Crest, back-to-back defending Class 4A
champion; and Box Elder, last year's Class 4A runner-up.
"It's pretty much the first real test of
the year for all these kids," Layton coach John Fager
said.
A couple of out-of-state teams will also
compete, including Bishop Lynch High in Dallas. The
Friars, the defending state champions in Class 6A (the
largest classification in Texas), boast Dak Adamson, one
of the top wrestlers in Texas, who could face
Springville's Jason Chamberlain in the championship round
in the 145-pound class Saturday.
Chamberlain is ranked No. 1 in the country
by Wrestling USA Magazine.
Notable teams competing: Wasatch, Viewmont,
Box Elder, Mountain Crest, Bishop Lynch (Dallas)
