Prep Wrestling: Alta's Kuhn Remains
Unbeaten
by Maggie Thach
OREM — There was nothing special about
this match. That's how Alta's Carson Kuhn approached the
All-Star Classic held at McKay Events Center at Utah
Valley State College on Tuesday.
Even when he was down a point against
Delta's Chasen Tolbert after the first period, he still
didn't do anything differently. Kuhn stuck to what he does
best and controlled the tempo of the match.
That got him a 7-5 win over Tolbert in the
103-pound classification and brought his season record to
28-0.
"I felt like I was in control the whole
match," Kuhn said. "I felt I could beat him on my feet, on
top or on bottom. I just wanted to work on my stuff and I
didn't worry about what he was doing."
Tolbert got the early lead with an escape
and a takedown in the first period. Tolbert's takedown was
the first time an opponent scored an offensive point
against Kuhn all season. But, Kuhn tied things up in the
second period with his second takedown after Tolbert
scored on an escape.
Going into the third period, Alta coach
Barry Harrington knew Kuhn would win.
"[Tolbert] is a hell of a kid. I felt he
counter-wrestled really well. It got [Kuhn] out of sync,"
Harrington said. "I just felt like after he tied it up, he
was on his way."
Tolbert was able to score off a penalty
but Kuhn finished the match with an escape and a takedown
to secure the win.
After the win, Kuhn was glad and honored
to be a part of the event but like his approach heading
into the All-Star Classic, Kuhn isn't going to treat this
win any differently from the others.
"I really never do anything different,"
Kuhn said. "I'm just going to work harder, as hard as I
can. Just keep pushing it extra and extra. I just want to
get that extra toughness so I can keep pulling away from
my competition."
Unblemished Record
