Delgado Leads UVU at Reno TOC

RENO, Nev. — With the majority of Utah Valley's starters taking Sunday's competition off in preparation of hosting No. 4 Oklahoma State on Monday, unattached junior 141-pounder Isaiah Delgado led the way for the Wolverines by posting a third-place finish at the 2021 Dollamur Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday at the Reno Events Center.

Delgado wrestled his way to a 4-1 record en route to placing third at 141 pounds. The placement marks the third podium finish of the young season for Delgado, who is redshirting the 2021-22 campaign for the Wolverines. Delgado previously won tournament titles last month at both the Roadrunner Open and the Cowboy Open.

Competing unattached, Delgado opened his 2021 Reno TOC run with back-to-back-to-back victories to reach the semifinal round. The 141-pound UVU junior defeated Luis Ramos of CSU Bakersfield, 3-1, former Wolverine and current San Francisco State Gator Joshua Tolentino, 10-0, and Grand View's Blake Gonzalez, 4-1, to advance to face 10th-ranked and three-time NCAA qualifier Grant Willits of Oregon State. The two-time Pac-12 champion Willits then got the best of Delgado by defeating him by a score of 11-3 to send Delgado to the third-place bout. Delgado then recorded a win by medical forfeit over 13th-ranked and 2020 All-American Real Woods to finish third.

With the 4-1 outing and the third-place finish, Delgado ups his season record to 12-1 while wrestling unattached on the year.

A total of four grapplers competed for UVU on Sunday and redshirt sophomore heavyweight Chase Trussell led the way by finishing one win shy of placing in the top-six at the event. Trussell posted a 4-2 outing at the tournament to up his season record to 9-3. Trussell recorded wins over Tommy Mommer of Grand View (6-2), Jacob Smith of California Baptist (3-1), Seamus O'Malley of Stanford (6-2), and Koby Johnson of Western Wyoming (6-2). His two setbacks came to Armando Barcenas of Simpson and Austin Harris of Oklahoma State.

The three other Wolverines competing for the team all went 2-2 on Sunday in sophomores Kainalu Estrella (133 pounds), Kobe Nelms (133), and second-year freshman Tanner Lofthouse (165).

Seven other Wolverines took part in the tournament unattached and second-year freshman 125-pounder Kase Mauger led the group by finishing one win shy of placing in his weight class with a 3-2 outing. Mauger recorded all three of his victories on the day via bonus points as he pinned both Francisco Barrera of Southern Oregon (4:44) and Nicholas Stringer of Simpson (0:44), as well as scored an 18-0 technical fall victory over Brendon Garcia of Wyoming. Mauger's lone two defeats came to Clarion's Joey Fischer, who is a current FloWrestling honorable mention ranked grappler, and Stanford signee Nico Provo.

Second-year freshman Tyson Humpherys also wrestled well while competing unattached on the day at 141 pounds as he went 4-2, while freshmen Merrell Morley (174), Mahonri Rushton (184), and Levi Kovacs (197) all went 2-2, and fellow freshmen Stockton O'Brien (141) and Jack Forbes (197) both finished with 1-2 showings.

As a team, UVU finished ninth out of 48 teams with 57 points. Oregon State won the tournament by crowning four individual champions and scoring 172 points in all, while Wyoming finished second with three champs and 169 total points.

The Wolverines will now return to Orem for their 2021-22 home opener against Big 12 power and fourth-ranked Oklahoma State on Monday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. in the UCCU Center. It will mark the first time that the Cowboys have visited Orem as well as the second highest ranked opponent that the Wolverines have ever hosted. The Big 12 Conference dual meet will be streamed live on FloWrestling, YouTube, and the WAC Digital Network. For ticket information, please visit GoUVU.com/tickets.
