Wolverines Drop Oregon State Dual

NAMPA, Idaho — Freshman Danny Snediker and 23rd-ranked Evan Bockman both recorded wins on the day for Utah Valley, but Oregon State-who is currently receiving votes for the NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and ranked 23rd by InterMat, proved to be too much for the Wolverines by winning eight of the 10 bouts en route to pulling out a 31-6 contest over UVU on Sunday afternoon at Columbia High School in Nampa, Idaho.

The second-year freshman Snediker pulled out a hard fought 3-2 decision over Oregon State's Matthew Olguin for UVU (5-3, 0-2 Big 12) at 165 pounds, while redshirt sophomore and 23rd-ranked Bockman later followed with a 7-3 decision over 2021 NCAA qualifier J.J. Dixon at 197 pounds. The Pac-12 Beavers (2-2, 0-0 Pac-12) won three of their eight contests by bonus points on their way to pulling out the Big 12 vs. Pac-12 neutral-site contest.

After three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time Pac-12 champion and 16th-ranked Devan Turner managed to pull out a tightly contested 5-3 decision over 15th-ranked UVU freshman Haiden Drury in the opening match at 133 pounds, UVU 2021 NCAA qualifier Ty Smith got off to a strong start against another OSU three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time Pac-12 champ in 10th-ranked Grant Willits with a quick takedown and two-point near fall to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Willits later responded, however, with a big takedown and pinning combination off of a scramble early in the second period to win via fall and give the Beavers an early 9-0 lead on the scoreboard.

Oregon State followed with another pin at 149 pounds thanks to a third period fall from the Arizona State transfer and 29th-ranked Beaver Cory Crooks over Sam Edelblute to extend OSU's lead to 15-0. The Beavers then followed with a 6-0 decision from three-time NCAA qualifier and 17th-ranked Hunter Willits at 157 pounds over UVU freshman Jaxon Garoutte to extend their lead to 18-0.

With UVU freshman Snediker and Oregon State's Olguin all knotted up at 2-2 in the third period at 165 pounds, Snediker managed to wrestle tough in the final stanza by riding Olguin out en route to earning a riding time point to defeat Olguin by a score of 3-2 and put the Wolverines on the scoreboard at 18-3. In another tightly contested bout at 174 pounds between UVU's hometown grappler and 32nd-ranked Kekana Fouret, who hails from Nampa, Idaho where he was a three-time state champion for Columbia High School, and 23rd-ranked Mateo Olmos of Oregon State, Olmos managed to come out on top thanks to a pair of third period takedowns to win by a score of 5-3.

The Beavers then followed up with a 13-4 major decision from No. 13 Trey Munoz over UVU's Hunter Morse at 184 pounds, but back responded the Wolverines with a 7-3 victory from 23rd-ranked Bockman over the 2021 NCAA qualifier for OSU Dixon at 197 pounds. The UVU redshirt sophomore and California Baptist transfer Bockman got off to a strong start over Dixon with a trio of first period takedowns to open a quick 6-2 advantage. Both grapplers would go on to each record an escape, as Bockman held on to defeat Dixon, 7-3, and move the team score to 25-6.

With the heavyweight bout all tied up at 1-1 late in the contest, the ninth-ranked OSU heavyweight and 2020 NCAA qualifier Gary Traub then had a big final 20 seconds on his way to pulling out an 8-1 decision over UVU's Chase Trussell to move the team score to 28-6 with one bout to go.

Then in the final match of the afternoon between UVU 2021 All-American and fifth-ranked Taylor LaMont and 2021 NCAA qualifier and 15th-ranked Brandon Kaylor of Oregon State, Kaylor seemed to be the aggressor as he built a 4-2 lead in the second period following a pair of takedowns. With LaMont trailing 5-3 in the third, LaMont was close to securing one of his patented Greco throws for the tying takedown midway through the final stanza, but Kaylor managed to fight it off on his way to picking up the upset win over the UVU three-time NCAA qualifier by a score of 5-3.

Sunday's contest marked UVU's final non-conference dual of the season.

The Wolverines will now return home for a trio of Big 12 duals on Jan. 14 and 15 at Lockhart Arena. UVU will first face North Dakota State on Friday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. before taking on both Air Force (5 p.m.) and South Dakota State (7 p.m.) on Saturday, Jan. 15. The duals will mark the first of five home matches for Utah Valley in the month of January.
